Joe Gomez’s future at Liverpool appears uncertain after he was left out of the squad for their Premier League opener against Ipswich Town. As he weighs his options, Newcastle United is actively pursuing a right-sided center-back before the summer transfer window closes on August 30.
Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace remains Newcastle’s top target, but negotiations have been challenging. Despite four bids, the latest reportedly valued at £65 million including add-ons, the two clubs have yet to reach an agreement for the Euro 2024 star. With time running out, Newcastle may need to decide whether to increase their offer for Guehi or explore alternative options like Gomez.

Earlier in the summer, Newcastle had explored the possibility of signing the 27-year-old Gomez in a £45 million deal, which would have included Anthony Gordon moving to Liverpool as part of the arrangement. However, this proposal was withdrawn after Newcastle addressed their Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) requirements. They achieved this by selling Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest and Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion for a combined total of £68 million.
As Newcastle weighs its options, the outcome of the Guehi negotiations will likely determine whether they reignite their interest in Gomez or pursue another target before the transfer window closes.
