The Toronto Maple Leafs have taken to social media to announce the signing of a 6’3″, 213-pound defenseman following their training camp.
On a day when the Leafs made 21 roster cuts as they edge closer to finalizing their lineup for the 2024-25 season, they also revealed that Rhett Parsons, a big right-shot defenseman, has signed a contract with their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies.
Parsons joined the Maple Leafs’ training camp as a free agent after completing his fourth season with the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers. He participated in the 2024 Prospect Showcase in Montreal and worked hard throughout training camp, skating with Group C—mainly composed of non-roster players and young prospects who were not expected to make the NHL roster this season.
The 21-year-old defenseman played in 68 games for the Tigers last season, recording 6 goals, 17 points, and 105 penalty minutes. Known for his physical style of play, Parsons is the kind of player that Brad Treliving values—big, physical, and gritty on the ice.
It remains unclear whether Parsons will start in the AHL or join the Maple Leafs’ new ECHL affiliate, the Cincinnati Cyclones. Regardless of where he ends up, Parsons is sure to bring the same dedication and intensity he showed throughout training camp.
