Top scorer for the doncaster Rovers, Joe Ironside, has praised the coaching staff at the team for enabling him to have the best season of his career thus far. After moving from Cambridge United to DN4 last summer, the 30-year-old has established himself as a key player for Grant McCann’s team. Last season, he scored 24 goals across all competitions, 20 of which came in the league as Rovers pulled off an incredible late-season run to the playoffs. The former Sheffield United player credits his remarkable stats to hard effort on the training field. Not only did the manager receive recognition from Ironside, but also first team coach Lee Glover and assistant Cliff Byrne.
“They’ve all been excellent. “The gaffer is always on at me and I work with Cliff all the time,” Ironside remarked in reference to Rovers’ matchday program.
“I work one-on-one with gloves, watch videos, and do other things to figure out how I can get better. As a staff, they collectively know how to bring out the best in me. “I want to work hard to reach my full potential. That’s my personality type. I like it best when the gaffer and crew are pushing me every step of the way. I enjoy a challenge. Following a traveling career that saw him play at various universities around the nation, including Cambridge, Nuneaton, and Macclesfield, Ironside is now content to call his home state of South Yorkshire.
Under the terms of the deal he signed last summer, he has two more years left. When Rovers return for another season in League Two in 2024–2025, he intends to continue where he left off, even though he’ll probably have to put up with some restless nights for the time being.
“It’s been really good for me personally being back at home,” he continues. In particular, because my girlfriend is expecting a baby in June. “I’ve been in a really good headspace on and off the field so long may that continue.”
