Kieran McKenna set to stay at Ipswich Town with extended contract, confirms Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United lose Erik ten Hag replacement option as 38-year-old PL manager set to sign new contract

Football writer Felizio Romano wrote about Chelsea’s summertime plans in his most recent Daily Briefing newsletter. He also confirmed that manager of newly promoted Ipswich Town, Kieran McKenna, who was being pursued by Chelsea, Man United, and Brighton, had chosen to stay at Portman Road with a better contract.

Regarding the issue, the reputable Italian journalist stated the following:

“It’s critical to elucidate another significant story regarding managers: Kieran McKenna was phoned by Chelsea to let him know he was no longer in the running to become their manager. He also had the option of going to Brighton, but they required a response by the end of this week. Alternatively, he could have waited to find out what transpired at Manchester United, where they are still analysing and debating internally on what to do with Erik ten Hag.

However, McKenna has now made the decision to dedicate his future to Ipswich Town. He intends to extend his contract; all the necessary arrangements are in place for him to ink a new agreement, which will be significant and involve significant sums of money. He’s been told he’s out of the running and will remain at Ipswich, therefore there have been no new communications with Chelsea.

“Kudos to Ipswich Town on this one; they’ve been holding out hope and have extended a significant deal to him. McKenna made the decision to accept after receiving a direct call from Chelsea informing him that he had not been selected to be the new manager. Brighton will shortly decide on a different candidate to take over as manager.

Since leaving United’s locker room to take on the management position at Ipswich Town and lead them to consecutive promotions, McKenna’s reputation has soared.

Although Erik ten Hag, a Dutchman who just last week won the Red Devils their second trophy under his leadership, was strongly connected to United, the team has not yet made a decision regarding his future.

However, Brighton is still looking for Roberto De Zerbi’s replacement, and Graham Potter is rumoured to be making a comeback.

Ipswich’s McKenna remaining is a good thing.

Unquestionably, McKenna should be given credit for the Tractor Boys’ meteoric climb. But it’s also acceptable to say that he should wait to start working at a Premier League team if he wants to become a top player.

Particularly when you consider the teams he has been linked to: Man United, who are starting a new era under a new sporting ownership and lack a pre-existing pedigree of managerial support, and Chelsea, who have shown themselves to be trigger-happy without silverware under the new regime—two establishments where ‘long-term’ projects are even less likely to materialise. McKenna’s reputation would have been destroyed if he had left either of those clubs.

He now has the opportunity to make a significant impression and demonstrate to everyone how he handles difficult situations. Though one might dream, it’s improbable that Ipswich will make another title run in the upcoming season. However, if McKenna continues on his current path, major league teams will pursue him more aggressively once more.
