Ryley Towler might leave Pompey on a loan for the upcoming campaign.
However, that is only with an eye towards the extremely bright future at Fratton for the highly promising defender.
John Mousinho will consider letting Towler go on a short-term basis with his lack of first-team experience this season.
But after establishing himself as a serious prospect with developing promise, the 21-year-old is viewed as a player with a significant role to play at PO4 in the long run.
That was evident when Towler entered the game on the last day and led the team to a 2-0 victory at Lincoln City with a man-of-the-match performance.
But this season, the former Bristol City men’s performance was only one of three league starts, while players like Sean Raggett, Regan Poole, and Conor Shaughnessy excelled.
When Towler first arrived at Fratton Park, he was given a long three-and-a-half year contract that would last until the summer of 2026.
When the team reassembles for preseason training at the end of June, Mousinho has stated he will exercise strict discipline over the entire group.
It’s obvious that some players will struggle to get playing time in the Championship as Pompey improves their team during a hectic summer transfer window.
Some will inevitably be free to look elsewhere before the window closes on September 1st, either permanently or temporarily.
Towler would only be allowed to leave on loan in order to develop into a well-liked player before joining Mousinho’s team again.
Next season, Mousinho intends to use four central defenders in the Championship.
Sean Raggett’s contract was not renewed, hence the only available players in that region of the pitch are Regan Poole, Conor Shaughnessy, Tom McIntyre, and Towler.
Before deciding on Towler, Poole’s recuperation from a cruciate knee injury and McIntyre’s from an ankle fracture would need to be finished.
Before approving a loan for the former AFC Wimbledon player, Mousinho would probably want to acquire another defender for the campaign.
