In an effort to climb the Championship standings, Cardiff City will be bolstering their team this summer following a strong campaign that saw them place 12th.

In the next months, Cardiff will have inflows and outflows similar to every other team in the division, which will unavoidably result in the loaning of some players.

The Bluebirds will be trying to take advantage of the loan system this summer, whether it’s with players who have experience playing for the first team but have fallen out of favor or with new players who are eager to experience playing senior football for the first time.

In light of that, Cardiff City ought to loan out these four players this summer.

Eli King

Eli King, a 21-year-old midfielder, joined the Bluebirds first squad in 2021 and has since made seven appearances for the team, including several loan stints after his first-team debut.

The Wales U21 international played on loan at Crewe Alexandra for the first half of the 2022–2023 season. He then played on loan at Morecambe and Ross County in 2023–2024.

King has done well in each of his loan stints, but with Cardiff’s depth in the midfield, he probably won’t get many playing time at Cardiff City Stadium the following year.

He’s obviously well thought of, as evidenced by his contract extension to 2026, and a complete season on loan in League One might prepare him well for a potential breakout the following season.

Ollie Tanner

Perhaps a surprising name on this list, Ollie Tanner could do with a loan next season to play regular football away from the Cardiff City Stadium.

Signed from non-league Lewes in the summer of 2022, Tanner spent time on loan with York City during the 2022/23 season, but flattered to deceive, leading to some supporters being surprised when he was given the chance by Erol Bulut ahead of the 2023/24 season.

He paid his manager back with a goal against Swansea in the South Wales Derby in September, but he failed to kick on, and would register just one more goal and assist all season.

Tanner perhaps showed that he’s not a Championship-standard player just yet, and he should be loaned out to a League One side next season to get some experience under his belt.

Joel Bagan

Joel Bagan, a 22-year-old left back, joined the Bluebirds in February 2020 and has since made 42 appearances for the team. However, he has spent this season on loan at Zulte Waregem in Belgium.

Although the Republic of Ireland youth international is obviously highly valued, it’s unclear if he’s yet talented enough to start regularly in the Championship. He did, however, sign a new three-year contract with the team last summer.

Bagan could use another loan spell, whether it be for a full season or a shorter one. The Bluebirds have Jamilu Collins on their roster at left-back and also had Josh Wilson-Esbrand on loan from Manchester City. It remains to be seen if the club will look to strengthen in that area again this summer.

Kion Etete

Kion Etete, a 22-year-old striker, had a somewhat unsuccessful 2023–24 season and found it difficult to establish himself as a regular member of Cardiff’s starting lineup.

The former Spurs player actually made 32 appearances overall across all competitions, starting just 12 league games and scoring just six goals.

Considering that Cardiff is likely to be interested in signing at least one striker this summer, it may present the ideal chance for them to loan Etete to a League One team or a European club.

The 22-year-old is clearly a promising player, and a loan spell playing regular first-team football would arguably be far more beneficial than sitting on the bench at Cardiff and playing a bit-part role.
