LATEST NEWS: A major boost to Millwall’s transfer pursuit of the “outstanding” Premier League player

Millwall have been linked with a bid to bring Japhet Tanganga back to the club after his loan spell.

Millwall have been provided a big boost in the transfer chase of Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga this summer.

The 25-year-old spent the back part of the 2023/24 season on loan at The Den and turned in a string of outstanding displays as he shone under Neil Harris. Tanganga made 18 Championship appearances as Millwall climbed to safety, netting two key goals against Southampton and Birmingham City in the process.

Harris has made his desire to bring the loan star back to the club on a permanent transfer no secret as he prepares for the forthcoming Championship campaign. However, any potential trade had been faced with some question marks amid rumors that the player may consider up other offers before agreeing on a return to Millwall.

Tanganga’s contract at Spurs was supposed to expire this summer but the club also maintained an option for another year with the midfielder. Triggering the clause would have allowed the Premier League outfit to seek a transfer fee for the player’s services.

However, on Wednesday morning, Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the club’s released list and Tanganga was among the names to be declared a free agent this summer. A statement read: “We can confirm the departures of Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet Tanganga following the expiration of their contracts.

“Central defender Japhet is a product of our Academy system and enjoyed his breakthrough campaign at first team level with us in 2019/20, memorably making his Premier League debut from the start against Liverpool in January of that season. Japhet went on to make 50 senior competitive appearances in our colours before commencing on loan spells with FC Augsburg in Germany and latterly Millwall during the recently-concluded campaign.”

With Tanganga’s services available without a transfer fee, other teams will undoubtedly be interested in signing him, but Millwall will once again be the clear favorite. According to reports, the London team and Spurs had agreed on a price in May.

Harris told the South London Press that Tanganga was “outstanding” while on loan from the squad. “It’s really important that everybody understands, not just Neil Harris and his team-mates, but the whole football club is a big fan of Japhet Tanganga,” Harris said.

“I believe I have stated in earlier pieces how much I would want to collaborate with him. This transfer window will see a lot of demand for the player Japhet.

“As a football team, there are instances when the process we go through involves individuals, agencies, and football clubs, and we can only go so far. We have certainly made a lot of effort to determine whether Japhet is a viable option for us during this window.”
