New insights reveal the AFL’s reasoning behind the hefty fine.
Eddie McGuire has suggested that the AFL may have seen the Ken Hinkley incident as a way to divert attention from other weekend controversies. The league imposed a $20,000 fine on Port Adelaide after Hinkley made a remark to Jack Ginnivan during the match that saw Port eliminate Hawthorn from the season.
Hinkley told Ginnivan, “you’re not flying,” following Ginnivan’s taunt directed at Sydney Swans player Brodie Grundy, which was, “see you in 14 days.” Port Adelaide acknowledged that Hinkley’s comment was intended to motivate the team, and Hinkley used it to show Ginnivan that his taunt had backfired.

Wilson explained on ‘Footy Classified’ that the AFL felt both Hinkley and Port Adelaide, particularly CEO Matthew Richardson, were not adequately apologetic during the weekend’s discussions. The severity of the fine was also influenced by the recent McCartney incident, as the AFL wanted to send a strong message against abuse by coaches and officials.
Hinkley has reportedly offered to cover the fine personally, despite the AFL’s order for Port Adelaide to pay it. A fan-driven fundraiser to assist with the fine was set up but later removed.
