LATEST: Portsmouth boss reveals picture over deal for former West Ham United and Manchester City defender

20 John Mousinho answers to the issues at centre of Pompey's summer transfer window plans

The Blues are anticipating clarity soon on whether defender Jamal Baptiste will secure a contract at PO4 after joining the club on trial.

Baptiste linked up with Mousinho’s squad this week following his departure from Manchester City earlier this summer. The 20-year-old initially started pre-season with another league team but opted for the opportunity at PO4 instead.

Following a solid outing at Gosport, Baptiste impressed further in a 3-0 victory over Hawks, showcasing both physicality and impressive passing from the back.

Manager Mousinho acknowledged that Baptiste’s situation could unfold in various ways this summer, but discussions are expected shortly to evaluate his progress.

Mousinho commented, “Jamal displayed composure on the ball and demonstrated good passing with both feet. His technical ability, typical of his background, was evident. He grew into the game, showing increased aggression, and overall, I’m delighted with his performance.”

“He’s fully fit and motivated, having spent last season on loan and returning eager to compete. Jamal had a successful trial with another league club before us, but the prospect of stepping up to Portsmouth led him to wait for a decision and assess another week here.”

“In terms of fitness, he’s in excellent shape and has shown determination in pre-season. We’re uncertain about the outcome and his fit within the squad, but it’s something we’ll monitor closely and discuss in the coming days.”

“Next week holds many possibilities, but Jamal has positioned himself well to secure a contract, possibly here. We’ll evaluate the situation and see how things develop, but he’s certainly given himself every opportunity.”
