Brian Branch was excited to rejoin with his Alabama teammate in the Detroit secondary when Terrion Arnold was selected in the first round of the draft by the Lions. The now-second-year defensive back was in Detroit for the draft and was reportedly noticed by many fans with a boot on his left foot while riding a scooter.
On Thursday morning, a photo from Branch’s agency, Klutch Sports Group, of him greeting Arnold sparked a commotion.
Several photographs from draft weekend show Branch on a scooter with his left foot in a boot. In the photographs shared on Reddit, he is wearing the same green Klutch Sports hoodie that he wore in the agency’s shot of him with Arnold.
Is the Lions’ defensive back Brian Branch severely injured?
At this point in the NFL offseason, particular injury information is largely unavailable and teams are not compelled to release it. Branch missed two games last season due to an ankle issue, specifically to his right ankle. He had a successful first season, finishing with 74 tackles, seven tackles for loss, 13 pass breakups, and three interceptions. He was ranked 14th by Pro Football Focus.
The draft in downtown Detroit was, of course, extremely packed, as is customary for an NFL draft. So, if Branch has a problem with his left foot/ankle, for example, walking around to go to places he might need to go is not a good idea. It’s fair to suppose that scooters were available to the general population. It’s only that Branch is recognisable as a Lions player, and seeing him not only on a scooter but also wearing a boot generates immediate alarm.
The Lions’ next session of OTAs begins on May 21, and it’s fair to wonder if Branch will be ready by then. For the time being, his wearing a boot isn’t a huge worry. Missing any relatively insignificant work in May, assuming he has a slight ailment, is considerably preferable to missing time in late July, August, or September.
