Mark Robins admits his Coventry City side did not show up until the second half of a potentially costly defeat against Southampton.

The Sky Blues lost 2-1 at St Mary’s Stadium in their game in hand over nearest play-off opponents Norwich City, who drew 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday, leaving City five points behind the sixth-placed Canaries with five games remaining in the Championship season.

City trailed 2-0 at halftime when Haji Wright missed an early penalty when he tumbled at an important moment.

“Obviously, if Haji had not slipped for the penalty, the scenario would have been different, but it could have been different in the first half because we just did not compete. We didn’t arrive till halftime, so they have to decide if they want to be challengers.

“And I believe in the first half they decided we weren’t going to be and gave them too easy goals. I’ve been told that the first goal was a handball (by Che Adams), but there’s nothing I can do about it, so it’s disappointing if it is.

“The penalty miss clearly had an influence because if we had scored, we would have known the crowd was tense, and that would have given us a small advantage. But we didn’t lay a glove on them for the first 45 minutes, which lost us the game. We won the second half, but that was little consolation.

“But let’s face it, they’re a good team with really good players who move the ball quickly, and if you don’t limit their rotations, they’ll always cause you problems, as they did in the first half.” We felt lot better after the break, but this is a setback for us.”
