Michael Valkanis emerges as Hibs manager

The Hibs have added Michael Valkanis to their list of potential head coaches.

The club’s new sports director, Malky Mackay, is rumoured to be considering several candidates to succeed Nick Montgomery, who was fired last week. Football Scotland can disclose that Mackay wants to take on the role of head coach rather than manager. Ajax assistant Valkanis is also under consideration.

The Australian is prepared to depart the Netherlands in search of a position as the main man. He has been working as John van ‘t Schip’s number two at the Johan Cruyff Arena since 2023.

It is also thought that he would like to try his hand at managing at Easter Road, wanting to become the next Australian manager to leave their stamp on Scottish football, similar to Ange Postecoglou. Because of his positions throughout Europe, he has a strong network.

In addition to serving as the assistant coach for the Greek national team in the past, Valkanis managed Hapoel Tel Aviv before departing the squad due to issues in the Middle East last year.

It is known that Hibs have a long list of potential managers to consider, and David Grey, who recently completed his fourth temporary assignment, is thought to have merited an interview for the position of head coach.

Both Stephen Robinson and Derek McInnes are no longer eligible, since the Kilmarnock manager in particular inked a new contract at Rugby Park.
