Dougie Imrie is set to lose some of his key players this summer.
Despite providing better terms, Morton lost three of their best players to Championship opponents.
About to be demoted Robbie Muirhead has already been revealed as a new player by Livingston, Robbie Crawford will rejoin Partick Thistle, and George Oakley has reached an agreement with Ayr United. During the previous season, Dougie Imrie relied heavily on the trio.Although Record Sport is aware that the Cappielow side offered all three terms at a higher rate than their previous Morton contracts, it was still significantly less than what was being offered elsewhere.
Ayr United has made striker Oakley an offer that is more than fifty percent higher. Last season, Morton had one of the lowest salary budgets in the Championship, while other teams were spending more than twice as much on players. Last season, manager Dougie Imrie had his squad fighting above their weight in both the Scottish Cup and the play-offs, where they were competitive for extended periods of time.
Even if the Morton board has now invested a sizeable six-figure amount in the pay budget, most teams at the same level still outspend them. Next season, Imrie will have to perform even more miracles on a budget in order to keep Morton competitive. Finding replacements for Muirhead and Oakley, who combined for 30 goals last season, will be his toughest task.
