My rating is two stars. Barry Ferguson suggests Rangers sign to steer clear of the naughty transfer habit that allowed Lewis to escape.

If you miss out on native talent, you will often find yourself up a certain stream without a paddle. For some reason, Rangers with my nephew Lewis experienced it. Josh Doig, Aaron Hickey, and Lawrence Shankland have all experienced comparable things at different points in time.

However, it is possible to learn from mistakes, and ideally there won’t be many more “ones who got away.” Rangers must be frugal with their summer spending and cannot afford to overlook local talent. In terms of hiring, Philippe Clement will have a busy summer. With the acquisition of Brazilian left-back Jefte, it has already begun, which is encouraging. Naturally, you have to reach far and wide to try to obtain the best player on the field for the money, such as Mohamed Diomande, who has been, in my opinion, a true find.

However, there must always be a delicate balance when attempting to sign players who are currently in the Premiership. This summer, whatever they bring in, they better be prepared. In the past, we brought in players from Kilmarnock like Kris Boyd and Steven Naismith, Dundee United’s Billy Dodds and Steven Thompson, Hibs’ Ian Murray, Kevin Thompson, Steven Whittaker, and Kenny Miller. I could write forever.

Each and every one of these individuals entered the game and performed admirably for the Rangers. My attention has been drawn to two Scottish teenagers who play central midfield for their clubs in the Premiership.

The young man who has always stood out to me when I’ve seen him perform is Lennon Miller. The child from Motherwell is incredibly talented. I was present at the Ibrox game when he made his league debut off the bench. At the age of sixteen, Motherwell was losing, and it was a historic occasion for a player of his young age. However, he was pressing his teammates—some of whom were twice his age—for the ball. It was very entertaining to watch. I could see there was a player there right then.

One more is Connor Barron. I have enjoyed what I have seen of him when I have watched him play for Aberdeen or the Scotland U21s. He would be available for hire this summer for a charge. What a little gem. I return to our Lewis now. If he had moved to Ibrox, it would have been wonderful. For whatever reason, the Rangers were not successful. I’m not sure if the management didn’t think highly of him at the time.

He would have been perfect for the Rangers, in my opinion. a little steely, adept with the ball, goal-oriented, vivacious, and powerful. Take a look at what he accomplished after becoming Bologna’s captain in Serie A. Lewis could have gone for nine or ten times what Bologna spent for him if he had not had that terrible injury, from which he will, I promise, recover larger and stronger.

Though I think another central midfielder is essential this summer, that ship has sailed. Someone who can anchor the midfield by planting his rear end squarely in the middle. In contemporary terms, it is a six. Someone to initiate moves and guard the backline. If you can get that, I believe we could see Nico Raskin at his finest next to Diomande; in Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final, the two of them really got in Celtic’s faces.

I was thrilled when Raskin initially arrived. His early performances showed a lot of promise, but after the new management took over, he sustained a few injuries, making his play quite inconsistent. However, in the past few weeks, he has returned and displayed indications that he is a fine football player—not in a way that left me in awe.

There is a football player there who can be improved, and he is only 23. He possesses the fundamentals: he can pass the ball, engage in tackles and scuffles without hesitation, and it appears that he can move fairly well across the field. Enjoying his beak is important, but when he returns, he needs to make sure he is pushing his way into the center. It serves as any team’s engine room. He must seize this opportunity now.

Make time, or break it? Most likely. If he has another inconsistent season, his career with the Rangers could end. Conversely, Diomande will only continue to get stronger and more proficient. I genuinely adore him. When he made his debut against Aberdeen at Ibrox, I was seated in the stands. I could see he had something special about him after just ten minutes of play.

He is agile, skilled with the ball, knows his way about the field, and has a sense of purpose. I predict that the upcoming season of Diomande will be even better. He appears to be eager to learn and to have a great positive attitude. He is the kind of guy that may eventually bring in a sizable sum of money for the Rangers. It is well worth the £4.5 million fee. He’s been a true gem. Hopefully, a few more will soon be discovered in the upcoming weeks.
