Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon was recently named as the new boss of Romanian top-flight side Rapid Bucuresti.
Out of work for just over a year and a half since his memorable stint in Cyprus with Omonia Nicosia, Lennon has frequently appeared as a pundit over the past few months on Sky Sports and the like. Now, though, he will buckle down and get to work with his new club.
Although his latest job is somewhat out there, given Lennon’s time with Nicosia, it isn’t entirely surprising. He is looking to rebuild his managerial credentials abroad after the dreadful Covid season with Celtic a few years back.
Still only 52, the manager who sealed the Hoops the quadruple-treble has a lot to offer, and monitoring his progress on the continent should be intriguing.
He had some noteworthy dugout moments in Cyprus, and one hopes the same will ring true in Romania.
Lennon recently lifted the lid on how he got the Bucuresti gig in the first place.
He said: [TalkSport via Glasgow Times] “It sort of materialised over the last month or so.
“I got contacted by an agent, the CV went in and then I spoke to the club on a Zoom call.
“I was in Athens about 10 days ago and the owner flew out to meet me from Bucharest and we had a long conversation about how he sees the club and what my role would be.
“And I was very impressed by him. He’s got big plans for the club. He’s only taken over the club in the last couple of years but already he’s putting his stamp on the club.
“He’s a very principled man, I liked him a lot and I liked the project he was trying to sell of the club.”
