“We are pleased to announce the signing of Australian defender Lachlan Byrd! The centre-back has agreed to a one-year contract with the Shots.

At 22 years old, Byrd enjoyed a successful season with Welling United in the Vanarama National League South, featuring in 50 matches across all competitions and earning their Player of the Season accolade.

Beginning his career in Australia, Byrd moved to Scotland in 2023, where he spent half a season with Airdrieonians in Scottish League One.

Byrd was a trialist with the Shots during our 23/24 pre-season campaign, notably playing 45 minutes in our recent victory over Hanworth Villa on Tuesday night.

First-Team Manager Tommy Widdrington commented: “Lachlan (Byrd) was someone we closely evaluated last pre-season, and we nearly signed him then. After playing around 50 games at Step Two and showing significant improvement, we closely monitored his progress.”

“He had a standout campaign, and after training with our group again in recent weeks, I am delighted to have him join us on a permanent basis.”

“After assessing our performance last season, we identified the need for defensive improvements. With the addition of Luke Jenkins and now Lachie, we have two players who are solid defenders first and foremost, which bolsters our squad significantly.”

“Combined with the players we retained and the promising youngsters coming through, I am confident in our defensive setup for the upcoming campaign.”

“I am certain that Lachie’s committed approach to his work will quickly endear him to The Shots fans!”

Head of Recruitment Jamie Hedges added: “Lachie (Lachlan Byrd) impressed us during a trial last pre-season, and under slightly different circumstances, he might have signed then!”

“Having excelled with Welling United, playing 50 games and earning their Player of the Year award, we believe now is the perfect time for him to step up and test himself at this level.”

“He is a robust defender who prioritizes his defensive duties and is also comfortable on the ball.”
