It appears that Victor Wembanyama thinks highly of his fellow Rookie of the Year. The star player for the San Antonio Spurs, Wembanyama, was asked to select a WNBA player that inspires him in a video feature that was made available on Friday. Wembanyama landed on Caitlin Clark, the sensational Indiana Fever player.
Wembanyama remarked of Clark, “[She was] the only player that I was actually in awe of the game [of] when she was in college. “When it comes to both women’s and men’s college basketball combined, she’s probably the best I’ve seen.” This is the entire video featuring Wembanyama’s remarks.
There is no denying that Wembanyama, 20, and Clark, 22, are the hottest prospects in their respective leagues. After having incredible rookie seasons—Wemby finished with 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 3.6 blocks per game, and Clark finished with 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists—both players—who were the top overall picks in 2023—won Rookie of the Year. As such, it is fair that Wembanyama has a lot of respect and gratitude for what Clark has been doing. However, as Clark recently found out when she was disqualified from a unanimous WNBA Rookie of the Year award, that is not always the case in her own league.
