Nick Montgomery breaks Hibs sacking silence and lists achievements he’s proud of

The former Hibees boss has had his say on his time in the job

Sacked Hibs boss Nick Montgomery

After barely eight months on the job, Nick Montgomery has spoken out about being fired by the Hawks.

The Hibees, who had David Grey in charge for the final two games, parted ways with the former Scotland under-21 player after an underwhelming season that saw them finish eighth and miss the top six. Montgomery suffered the price when he lost to Ross County and Aberdeen crushed him after being told the results from the top six match were insufficient.

Under Lee Johnson, the team had dropped its opening three league games, so Montgomery is proud of his ability to turn things around at that time and advance in the cups. Along with four other young players, he took great pride in giving Rory Whittaker, the club’s youngest player ever, his debut.

He remarked, “It was an honour to be appointed manager of Hibernian Football Club and to become part of a club with so much history,” in a statement made public by the League Managers’ Association. The team had had a bad start to the season, but after I arrived with my assistant manager Sergio and goalkeeping coach Miguel, I knew we could turn things around and help the team contend for cups as well as the top six spots.

“Although I’m happy that we advanced to the Scottish Cup quarterfinal and the League Cup semi-final, I’m sad that we lost by a hair in the final minute of the match to finish outside the top six. Along with four other academy graduates, I am incredibly delighted to have handed the youngest player in the club’s history his or her debut. I hope they keep improving and soon enough become regulars in the first team.

“I leave having had the opportunity to meet some amazing individuals and to see firsthand the fervent fan base that stood by the team through all of the season’s difficulties. I want to express my gratitude to everyone of the players and staff for their hard work while I was manager. I have no doubt that the club will be able to expand and meet its goals in the near future thanks to the Black Knight group’s investment and internal collaborations.

“I would like to thank the Gordon family for the opportunity, as well as Ben Kensell, Brian McDermott and the board of directors, and I wish the club well moving forward.”
