‘Nothing in it’ – Sunderland transfer rumour rubbished by manager after recent reports

According to Halifax Town manager Chris Millington, the team isn’t considering Sunderland midfielder Caden Kelly for the summer.

Nothing in it' - Sunderland transfer rumour rubbished by manager after recent reports
Kelly, 20, made his Sunderland team debut in The Carabao Cup under Alex Neil in the 2022–2023 season, but he has since mostly played for the club’s under-21 squad. During the previous season, the attacker saw six appearances on the first team’s bench but was not used.

The former Manchester City player was a major contributor to Sunderland’s under-21 team’s remarkable season, which saw them place in the Premier League 2 play-offs before defeating Reading and West Ham to go to the Tottenham Hotspur final.

Kelly was scheduled to stay at the Academy of Light for the upcoming season, according to Sunderland’s latest retained list, after the team exercised an option in the player’s contract. But according to a recent story by Alan Nixon of The Sun, Kelly was being watched by Halifax, a National League team.

“That has nothing at all, no. When questioned about Kelly by the Halifax Courier, Halifax’s management stated, “We didn’t take any loans last year.””I understand that some view it negatively, but the reality is that it has resulted in minutes for players like Adam Senior, Kane Thomson-Sommers, Flo Hoti, Adan George, Andrew Oluwabori, and Jack Evans.

“All of these young athletes hoping to make a name for themselves at this level are in a great place heading into their second season with Halifax Town. We have the ability to look into the loan market if it strengthens us or if it provides a safety net in the event of an injury or extremely poor performance. However, finding players who are committed to giving Halifax Town their all over the long term is our first goal.”

Nixon also said on the same day that League Two team Notts County could be interested in custodian Matty Young, who is hoping to advance in his promising career, on a loan for the upcoming campaign. It is recognised that Young’s camp wants him to keep playing frequently in the hopes of eventually making it into Sunderland’s starting lineup.
