Nottingham Forest pondered dismissing Nuno twice, Marinakis sought title-winning boss

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo is quietly winning over his critics at the City Ground.

After the Reds’ 1-0 victory at Anfield last week, the Portuguese manager at Forest may be on the verge of leaving.

Callum Hudson-Odoi, who scored the game-winning goal against Liverpool the previous weekend, is just one of the many players at Forest who have advanced under his coaching. Last weekend, Espirito Santo demonstrated his skill as a tactician by outwitting Arne Slot and handily defeating him in his Premier League debut. His relationship with Evangelos Marinakis is said to be strong these days but it’s not always been a bed of roses it would seem.

Nottingham Forest considered sacking Nuno Espirito Santo

Tom Collomosse of the Daily Mail reports that Forest reportedly thought about cutting ties with Espirito Santo twice during the previous campaign. Espirito Santo is believed to have become uneasy once Forest’s four-point deduction was verified, which altered his interaction with the hierarchy. They objected to the head coach’s training methods, and Marinakis asked several of the more experienced players about Espirito Santo.

But now that the preseason is over, things are reportedly less tense and Espirito Santo has the board’s full support. That isn’t shocking, given that the team has started the current season undefeated and achieved what was likely the best outcome since Forest’s Premier League return last week. Espirito Santo has benefited from the board’s support, and the summer hiring was excellent.

Marinakis liked Marco Silva as possible Forest head coach

The article also states that Silva’s former employer at Olympiacos, Marinakis, was a fan of the current Fulham manager.

With an impressive 79% victory percentage in the 48 games he managed while in Greece, he helped Olympiacos win the league in 2015–16. It appears that Marinakis and Silva are still close, and given the manager’s increasing popularity, Marinakis may be considered for a position in the future. Given Forest’s difficulties the previous season, it was likely a pipe dream that Marinakis would be able to lure Silva away from Fulham nonetheless.

Given that Espirito Santo deserves an opportunity to establish his dominance on this team, it is unlikely that Forest will try to make a change at this point. Even his most ardent detractors would find it difficult to criticize the Portuguese manager given the amount of work he has put in to establish himself and the team’s results this season. It’s fascinating to consider what Forest can do this season under his direction, and Marinakis is obviously prepared to give talented coaches more time to establish themselves.
