NSW skipper endorses Keary amid injury crisis

Trent Robinson, the head coach of New South Wales, has supported Luke Keary’s claim to wear the No. 7 shirt. Penrith star Nathan Cleary will miss the 2024 State of Origin series due to a hamstring injury.

Although Keary has only played once for the Blues, he is a key member of the Chooks and helped the team defeat the Warriors in round 10.

With Cleary ruled out for eight weeks, the news that he would not be available for selection improved the 32-year-old’s chances of getting selected.

James Tedesco, the captain of the Blues and a colleague of the Roosters, has expressed his belief that Keary has what it takes to play in the Origin arena, even if Keary has announced that this season will be his last in the NRL.

“He’s been playing really well all year and he’s the most consistent half,” Tedesco remarked at Sunday’s press conference following the game.

Who knows? There seems to be a lot going on in the halves with injuries and [concerns about] the availability of personnel. Keary would definitely fit in.

Announcing that he believes the Origin arena will not only be a tremendous honour for his players but also help enhance the Roosters game, Robinson stated he will do everything in his power to help his players be identified for selection.

“This is the time where I start getting asked a lot of questions about Origin,” he stated.

“I believe that continuing to drive home will give us the best opportunity to place individuals in a position where they could be selected. Today, we witnessed incredibly self-assured combos work extremely hard.

“You must have the confidence to win the moment if you’re going to play with assurance. Our game might benefit from a little more hardness, which is present in the Origin arena. We have to keep going, anticipating next week.

“If [the Roosters players] keep putting their best foot forward Madge [Michael Maguire] will start looking up and so will Billy [Slater].”

Although Maguire hasn’t yet guided the NSW team into a match, his options are getting less every day due to the loss of several probable representative players to injury.

In addition, Cameron Murray of South Sydney and Tom Trbojevic of Manly have been eliminated, and Michell Moses of Parramatta hasn’t played since the third round.

Due to a slight calf issue, Nicho Hynes was left off of the Sharks roster on Saturday. It is unknown, however, if he will be able to play for Cronulla in the Magic Round.

Though they were both put on report against the Warriors, Blues prospects Joseph Suaalii and Angus Crichton aren’t anticipated to miss much time out.

Before Origin selection, Maroons coach Billy Slater must deal with a little casualty ward: Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, Tom Gilbert, and Kalyn Ponga are all out of the 2024 series.

At Accor Stadium on June 5, the series begins.
