Old Trafford clash: Can Manchester United wreck Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes?

Manchester United will face Liverpool at Old Trafford in the Premier League this weekend, looking to duplicate their recent FA Cup victory against their opponents.

Three weeks ago, the Red Devils won a tense FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool at Old Trafford, with Amad Diallo scoring a late winner to extinguish Jurgen Klopp’s club trophy dreams.

However, the upcoming encounter feels quite different. Liverpool regained the Premier League lead with a late victory over Sheffield United at Anfield, reinforcing their title prospects.

While Erik ten Hag’s club triumphed 4-3 in their previous meeting, United suffered a shocking 2-3 defeat in their most recent match, squandering a potential victory over Chelsea in a tense game that featured a dramatic 101st-minute winning goal.

Despite their opponents’ midweek successes, Liverpool’s win over Sheffield United returned them to the top of the Premier League. Rivals Arsenal and Manchester City will be hoping for a favour from the Red Devils as they look to avenge their FA Cup defeat against them.

United’s recent league performance has been inconsistent, with only one win in their last five games. Meanwhile, Liverpool has performed admirably away from home, winning six of their last seven Premier League away games and maintaining a scoring streak of 26 consecutive away games across all competitions.

Liverpool’s dominance in 2024 is unprecedented in Europe’s top five leagues, with 16 wins and 59 goals in all competitions. Despite a goalless draw against Manchester United earlier this season, they have not failed to score in either of their Premier League meetings with the Red Devils since 2007/08, hinting a potential retaliation.

Prior to the match, Ian Wright expressed concern for Manchester United, forecasting a crushing defeat against Liverpool at Old Trafford. The former Arsenal midfielder believes Liverpool will be more determined and brutal, attempting to put United in their place.

“I fear for Manchester United,” Wright said on his Ringer FC podcast. “I believe Liverpool will be more focused and ruthless than they were in the FA Cup game.

“We know how vicious United can be, and [Alejandro] Garnacho alone will be a threat. However, Liverpool will want to go there and put them in their place.

“I’m concerned about United because I see another large defeat, a nice defeat to be honest. It’s not like Old Trafford is a fortress any more. If Liverpool show up with their heads on, it might be a major concern for United.”

Ten Hag believes that, despite recent results, his club has demonstrated its ability to compete with the best teams in the division. The Dutchman admitted that United must learn how to secure three points.

“You have seen that we possess qualities. We have several excellent players. “We can build momentum and play at very high levels,” he remarked. As the two football powerhouses prepare to rekindle their rivalry, all eyes will be on Old Trafford to see if United can once again impede Liverpool’s title hopes, or if the Reds can continue their relentless quest of Premier League gold.
