It looks like Derby County has received a last-minute lifeline in regards to one of its transfer targets.
With several stories connecting the Rams to possible new hires, Derby County looks to be actively seeking fresh additions.
Josh Windass, a 30-year-old striker whose contract with Sheffield Wednesday expires this summer, is one of the names that they have on their transfer radar before the summer. However, the Owls have now extended an offer to Windass.
Paul Warne is reportedly desperate to recruit Cardiff City loan player Ebou Adams again, and Herbie Kane is also being linked after being released by Barnsley.
Due to Joe Wildsmith’s uncertain future, Derby County is also looking for a custodian. Viktor Johansson of Rotherham United has been suggested.
According to reports on Friday, Johansson was scheduled to have a medical at Stoke City. But when it comes to the Swede, the Rams might have some optimism.
Steve Evans comments on Viktor Johansson future at Rotherham United
Steve Evans, the manager of Rotherham United, discussed Johansson’s future with the team in a statement on Football Heaven.
Evans stated: “I understand Stoke City is in negotiations with Viktor’s representatives.” However, I believe there might be one or two more.
“They are one of the few that have matched what was in the contract,” Evans continued.
In 45 Championship games for Rotherham United in 2023–2024—a team that finished in last place—Johansson, 25, maintained six clean sheets.
Nonetheless, with 177 total stops in the Championship last season, the Swedish international made 27 more saves than any other goalie.

Derby County given hope over Viktor Johansson deal
Although Johansson’s transfer to Stoke City seems certain, it doesn’t seem set in stone, therefore Derby County and Warne might be hoping for a last-minute move for the Swede.
That is, assuming Derby is among the teams that have matched Rotherham’s release clause. There is a lot of interest in him, and some teams in the Championship may try to recruit him this summer as well.
However, Derby might have an opportunity to sign Johansson if his negotiations with Stoke City fail, which would be an incredible addition for Warne.
Johansson’s numbers demonstrate how crucial he was to Rotherham last season, and since Derby County is probably struggling at the bottom, having a seasoned goalie like Johansson will be essential.
Nevertheless, Wildsmith, who won the League One Golden Glove in 2023–2024, has an uncertain future.
He might want another chance to win the championship, and if he continues at Pride Park, he might be a major contributor to the Rams’ success the following year.
