Winger Josh Murphy acknowledges that as Oxford United prepares for its first season in the Championship in 25 years, he would seize the opportunity to stay on.

Murphy finished a fantastic season that saw him score six goals in the last 15 games of the season by scoring both goals in the U’s 2-0 play-off final victory over Bolton Wanderers at Wembley on Sunday, propelling the team into the second tier.

The winger’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign, and while he has been linked to a number of other clubs, including Hull City, he claims he is content and at ease working with Des Buckingham.

“It’s just a dream for me and the club,” he said to SportsBoom. “Helping to return the club to its rightful place is just fantastic. It’s fantastic that the club has been promoted, even if the goals had been scored by someone else.

“I wish I were in these hues the next year. I feel at home and content in this club. It’s still enjoyable to me. It’s been a roller coaster since the gaffer (Des Buckingham) arrived, so I’m excited about him. However, I believe that he is an excellent manager and coach who received what was rightfully his. I’m merely delighted for him and the youngsters.

“I’m confident that we can perform well in the Championship the following year. This is an exciting collection of guys, and we play a terrific style of football.”

After returning from a management stint in India, Buckingham assumed leadership of the team in the middle of the season and is still committed to keeping the gifted winger at Kassam Stadium.
