Only a year after moving from England to Sporting Lisbon, former Coventry City player Viktor Gyokeres has made hints that he may be amenable to switching teams in the summer. With two games remaining, the 25-year-old striker has helped the team win the Portuguese top flight championship with 40 goals. He is well-liked ahead of another busy window that will be jam-packed with rumours regarding his future.

The Sweden international scored 22 goals for the Sky Blues just a year ago, drawing interest in his services both domestically and internationally. His move to Portugal has shown to be a wise option, as the player’s reputation and stock have increased significantly.

In July of last year, Coventry paid well over £20 million for Gyokeres, and now they stand to gain even more from the player thanks to a sell-on clause that is estimated to be worth 10% of the difference between the player’s next sale price and the price City received for him. With four years remaining on the center-forward’s Sporting deal and an £86 million release clause, that might be significant.

His services have been connected to various European teams as well as a number of English Premier League clubs, such as Chelsea and Arsenal.

Gyokeres told the Portuguese publication Record, on his future plans: “I love being here.” It’s been wonderful. Watch what transpires. It’s football here. Nothing can be promised by me.

“But I really enjoy being here, and I have a contract with Sporting,” he continued. In football, things move quickly, so we have to adjust.

It seems like Gyokeres’ decision to come with Sporting in the first place last summer and his remarkable success this season were greatly influenced by manager Ruben Amorin. Amorin’s future, however, is reportedly in doubt as well. The gifted coach has been connected to a number of prestigious positions around Europe, including one at Liverpool, prior to the Reds appointing Arne Slot as their new manager at the end of the current campaign.

“It’s hard to predict the future without Rúben Amorim,” Gyokeres remarked. We still have a few games left until the season ends, and he is now our coach.
