Although Andy Halliday claims that Rangers manager Philippe Clement is not “under pressure” at Ibrox, the Belgian’s performance against Celtic in the Old Firm will be “massive.”
The Light Blues’ season comes to a conclusion on Saturday, May 25, when they travel to Hampden Park to play their Glasgow rivals in the Scottish Cup final for the fifth time this year.
In Old Firm matches, Clement has yet to defeat Brendan Rodgers. Halliday acknowledges that if the Light Blues falter, this may be the beginning of a rough patch for the Belgian, but he doesn’t think the Belgian will be fired if the Gers lose.
Speaking on The Open Goal YouTube channel, he stated, “I think it’s a big game,” on May 20, 47:30. In terms of his work, I don’t think it’s significant, and I don’t think he’s under any pressure to perform.
What will that be, though? You have lost all four of your Old Firm games, and the first one will take place at Celtic Park the following season. This is huge, in my opinion, for him.
Should Rangers lose their Old Firm match against Celtic at Hampden, will Philippe Clement depart the team?
Even while Clement won’t be under pressure, he will understand that Saturday’s match might very well determine how long he stays in Glasgow because the Belgian cannot wrap off his first Scottish campaign without defeating the Light Blues’ fiercest opponents.
Even if the Gers have faltered against every opponent this season, these are the most important games, and too often, the Belgian Rangers have seemed to be a world away from the Hoops.
Simply put, if something doesn’t change, the fans’ pressure will only increase over the next several weeks and months, and Clement won’t have the support of the whole Ibrox community when the next season starts.
That’s exactly what happened to Michael Beale last summer, and the Englishman was fired after a dismal start to the season and a few bad performances. Clement will be frantic to avoid the same outcome.
