Player discusses picking Coventry over

Milan van Ewijk has stated that he joined Coventry City last summer because they had a clear plan for him and so appeared more appealing than larger name possibilities.

In an interview with De Volkskrant, the defender discussed his career and current success with Coventry.

He joined them for €4.3 million from Heerenveen in the summer and hasn’t looked back since, making 44 appearances in all competitions and playing over 3000 minutes.

The decision has proven to be quite wise for him, as he has established himself in England, demonstrated his comfort, and received excellent feedback for his performances.

He had other suitors, including PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Club de Portugal, and Anderlecht, but chose Coventry instead.

Van Ewijk may be expecting to capitalise on the club’s recent player development and sales to larger clubs, with Viktor Gyökeres serving as a prime example.

He, however, maintains that it was more a matter of them providing a clear and optimistic plan, as well as being on the path to the Premier League.

“Last summer I wanted to go to a club with a clear plan, where I could play a lot,” he told reporters.

“The other clubs were intrigued, but the details remained unclear. Coventry intended to play with five defenders, and as a wingback, I would have plenty of opportunities to use my speed.

“The goal is, of course, to gain promotion with Coventry, but the nice and unpleasant thing about the Championship, the second level of English football, is that anyone can beat anyone. Promotion will be difficult.

“But ultimately, I came here for me. I want to improve myself, and what the media or others think of me is unimportant to me.”
