De Telegraaf reports that the player is finalizing a €7 million deal to Southampton as a result of being excused from the training camp.
The publication claims that after agreeing to a deal worth about €7 million for him, the Dutch team has allowed Sugawara “space” to complete his move to Southampton.
The defender was reportedly headed to England for a medical checkup, according to reports, after Southampton tried to sign him to replace Kyle Walker-Peters.
The player was given permission to leave Alkmaar’s training camp in Epe yesterday in order to finalize the move, according to De Telegraaf, who does not corroborate that claim.
The player is then discussed, along with how the Dutch team will be losing a true “mood maker” in the locker room. Sugawara is described as a player who enjoys making “funny statements or funny faces” when he can.
Thanks to his “open character,” he was praised for how well he adjusted to the club despite only knowing rudimentary English.
An more indication of the kind of guy Southampton is acquiring comes from a humorous story the newspaper includes about his using an electric scooter to get from his house to the team’s training facility.
Fans of Saints will undoubtedly be pleased to hear these revelations, especially considering some of the stories that have been reported about football players lately. If the De Telegraaf is to be believed, Saints fans may look forward to their new acquisition arriving sooner rather than later.
