Despite Hoffenheim deeming his loan spell a success, Wout Weghorst will be returning to Burnley this summer.
That’s according to journalist Florian Plettenberg, who claims that Burnley’s striker won’t be joining the German team permanently.
Weghorst had a brief stints at Manchester United and Besiktas before to joining Hoffenheim on loan from Burnley in the summer.
At the time, it was made plain that he was not part of the Clarets’ future plans, and the idea had been that he might end up back in the Bundesliga and prompt a permanent move.
In the end, he was a mainstay for Hoffenheim this season, playing in 65% of the Bundesliga’s available minutes and finishing with seven goals and three assists in 28 games.
Plettenberg claims that although the club’s management is pleased with his achievements and views the transaction as a success, they will not be making an offer for a long-term contract.
Rather, at the conclusion of his loan, Burnley will get the 31-year-old back and must make a decision about what to do with him.
Weghorst is in the last year of his contract and has indicated he has no desire to play in the Championship, so it seems likely that he will go permanently—though not to Hoffenheim.
