Pompey boss’ delight at rejected pair swiftly finding new homes

After their heartbreaking Pompey rejection, both were signed by aspirational Rotherham in less than three weeks.

Sean Raggett and Joe Rafferty, the champions of the League One title, were signed rather quickly, which is certainly not surprising to John Mousinho.

Three weeks prior to the formal opening of the transfer window, the Millers revealed the two-year contracts for the defensive pair.

Unquestionably, the team that placed lowest in the Championship and was relegated has had an incredibly fast start to their hiring campaign.

Even though they were disappointed to be let go following an incredible season, the two departed Fratton Park amicably.

Mousinho texted the well-liked couple congratulations because he was genuinely happy to see them join a new club.

“It’s no surprise because they’ve had such good seasons at this level and are absolutely fantastic signings,” he said to The News. They are currently vying at the top of League One.

Both players wear medals commemorating their league victories around their necks, thus it is only fitting that they received multi-year contracts for those performances.

After that, I texted both of them to congratulate them. We ended our relationship amicably, and we had mature discussions about it. Joe in particular brought it up, expressing his astonishment more than the other one.

That was alright; we shook hands and explained why. Joe was clearly disappointed, and while we wish we could have provided everyone our contact information, we have to make the best choices we can, and those were ours.

Like we do with every hiring decision, we will live and die by it. We have to choose wisely for the benefit of the football team because the evidence is in the pudding.

When it comes to whether players belong on the team, I always disagree with them. It’s excellent that all 25–26 of my guys believe they should start games; that’s what I want.

“I have to choose a team that I believe will accomplish that, and we as a recruitment department as a whole must try to make those decisions as well.”

We had a nice talk with those two, and I sincerely hope the best for them in the upcoming season. If, at this time next year, they are discussing championship football, I wouldn’t be shocked.

Jonson Clarke-Harris, Liam Kelly, Zak Jules, Joe Powell, and Shaun McWilliams are joining Rafferty and Raggett.

“Rotherham have done some really good business early on,” Mousinho continued. They’ve selected two players who were instrumental in our league-winning season, and Steve Evans is an experienced manager anyhow.

It would surprise me if they weren’t vying for promotion from League One given his track record at Rotherham and the players he has brought in.
