Premier Division round-up: Derry City and Waterford claim wins as Shelbourne stay top

Waterford captain Michael O'Connor opens up on gambling addiction and why it's now 'time to man up' - Irish Mirror Online

Derry City defeated Galway United 2-0 to maintain pressure on league leaders Shelbourne.

After losing on the road against Shamrock Rovers last month, Ruaidhri Higgins’ team has bounced back nicely, earning seven of a possible nine points in their previous three games.

However, the Candystripes had to wait until the second half to take the lead, with Will Patching and Patrick Hoban finding the back of the net.

Who Ought to Manage England Next?

After the Reds overcame Dundalk at home on Friday night, Derry is now only two points behind Shels at the top of the standings.

In a dull match, the Reds defeated the Lilywhites by a slim 1-0 margin.

This season, the Richmond Road venue has hosted some fantastic games, but this was most definitely not one of them.

The second half was only slightly better than the first, which was incredibly boring.

For all of the game, Shelbourne possessed the majority of the ball but lacked the inventiveness to penetrate a strong Dundalk defence. However, halfway through the second half, John Martin managed to achieve just that.

At the RSC, Waterford easily defeated Sligo Rovers 4-1.

It was a test too big for John Russell’s team, since the Bit O’Red were missing a number of first-team players due to injuries and state exam engagement.

The Blues took the lead in the first half thanks to Ben McCormack, and an hour later, Connor Parsons extended their lead.

After Wilson Waweru of Sligo scored a consolation goal, Padraig Amond scored twice to seal the victory for Keith Long’s team.

Meanwhile, Drogheda United moved up out of last place at Weavers Park after securing a point in a scoreless draw against St Patrick’s Athletic.

In a match with little opportunities, Drogheda was deserving of a share of the victory since Stephen Kenny’s Pats team was lacklustre offensively, especially in the second half at Weavers Park.

With two more games to go, the Pats are still in ninth place, eight points above the bottom two, but Drogheda now leads Louth rivals Dundalk on goal differential and into the relegation playoff spot.
