Premier League recommended bigger deduction for Everton that may have ended in relegation

The Toffees have been deducted two points for a second breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, however, talkSPORT understands the Premier League recommended they be deducted five for the three-year period that ran until the 2022/23 season.

Premier League PSR rules allow clubs to lose £105million over the course of three years, but Everton were found to have exceeded this by £16.6million.

It is the second points deduction faced by Everton in just a few months, with Sean Dyche’s side set to appeal the punishment.

The Merseysiders have already been handed a 10-point deduction for their first PSR rule break, however this was reduced to six points after an appeal.

That deduction was with regards to the three-year cycle ending in 2021/22, although the Premier League recommended a 12-point deduction for that.

If the Premier League’s recommendation of a total 17-point deduction had been imposed, they would be sitting in 19th position and a huge seven points from safety.

Instead, their eight-point penalty has left them just two points above the drop zone on 27 points.

In contrast, had they avoided punishment altogether, they would be sitting 14th in the Premier League and far enough away from the relegation places to be considered safe for another season.

With seven fixtures remaining, Everton now face the fight of their lives to avoid being kicked down into the Championship.Confirming the points deduction, a Premier League statement said: “An independent Commission has given an immediate two-point deduction to Everton FC for a breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules [PSRs] for the period ending Season 2022/23.

“Over a three-day hearing last month, the independent Commission heard evidence and arguments from the club in respect of a range of potential mitigating factors for its admitted breach of £16.6million, including the impact of its two successive PSR charges.

“Having done so, the Commission determined the appropriate sanction to be a two-point deduction, taking effect immediately.

“The independent Commission reaffirmed the principle that any breach of the PSRs is significant and justifies, indeed requires, a sporting sanction.”

Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell told talkSPORT players being continually knocked with the news won’t help them in the final stretch of the season.

“When you do the business, you don’t expect the points to be taken off you,” he said.

“So you’ve got to get yourself up again to go again and that’s going to be the toughest part for Sean Dyche.”

Previously, the deduction galvanised the team but it’s not a guarantee it will happen now.

“We’re really at the business end of the season now – two points is not the end of the world but they will have to appeal [the decision] because, that [1-0] win against Burnley, means it was a draw,” Campbell added.
