‘Quick, powerful’: Ex-Rangers ace says £4.5m man ‘miles better’ than Ibrox predecessor, critics are so wrong

Andy Halliday, having faced Cyriel Dessers on the pitch this season while playing for Motherwell, believes critics of the Rangers striker should take a closer look at his performance. Dessers, a player who has divided opinions in Rangers’ recent history, continues to be questioned by some, even after a strong start to the season.

Despite this, Halliday insists that those doubting Dessers are mistaken. After Rangers’ 2-1 win over Motherwell in August, manager Philippe Clement praised both Vaclav Cerny and Conor Barron, but Halliday was most impressed by Dessers, who caused problems for his team’s defense.

Dessers’ recent brace in Rangers’ League Cup quarterfinal win against Dundee was a prime example of his abilities. Halliday compared him to Antonio Colak, noting that while Colak was prolific for Rangers, he often went missing in games where the team struggled. In contrast, Halliday argues that Dessers brings much more to the table, especially in his link-up play and physical presence outside the box.

Halliday acknowledged that Dessers can be frustrating at times due to his inconsistency—he might miss an easy chance only to score a spectacular goal moments later. However, Dessers has improved significantly this season, with seven goals in nine games. His ability to involve his teammates in play has also developed, as noted by Motherwell captain Paul McGinn, who said Dessers’ early struggles with ball control have since improved.

Rangers legend Kris Boyd also praised Dessers for his clinical finishing in the Dundee match, highlighting the striker’s instinctive play. Boyd, like Halliday, believes Dessers silenced his critics with two well-taken goals and hopes to see him continue this form against Malmo and Hibernian in the coming matches.
