Days of Thunder was released in 1990, and its reaction was mediocre at best. The $60 million movie only made $157 million worldwide and was criticised by some critics for its awkward dialogue and flat characters.
Nearly 25 years later, The Hollywood Reporter reports that Paramount Pictures and Tom Cruise are planning to go back to the circuit for Days of Thunder 2 in an attempt to duplicate the success of Top Gun: Maverick.
According to reports, the studio and celebrity are aggressively pursuing scripts for the follow-up to Tony Scott’s racing movie, even if a sequel to the $1.5 billion grossing Top Gun is still a top priority.
Cruise portrayed the aptly called Cole Trickle in the original, a hotshot driver whose rivalry with seasoned racer Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker) ends in a massive collision that turns the rivals into allies. Cole chooses to run Rowdy’s car in the renowned Daytona 500 race against shady newcomer Russ Wheeler (Cary Elwes), spurred on by a romance with Nicole Kidman’s Doctor.
All of this is contingent upon Cruise’s approval of the script and his ability to find time in his hectic schedule, which also includes Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s untitled Warner Bros. feature, Mission: Impossible 8 and its inevitably reshooted version, and Doug Liman’s space project.
