Rangers close to securing deal for ‘long-term’ target, player all set to join Ibrox

The Gers are looking to secure a “six-figure” deal for the Fluminense youngster. The move is subject to work permit being agreed.

The newspaper reported (print edition, 22 May page 51) that Jefte has been a “long-term” target for the Bears and the club now look set to get their main target.

He was linked with a move to Ibrox in the January window, but APOEL, the Cyprian club where the Brazilian was plying trade on loan, blocked the move. The 20-year-old has “knocked that move back” for a switch to Scotland.

Jefte is expected to replace veteran Borna Barisic, who is all set to join Turkish club Trabzonspor in the summer window.

Rangers looking to make smart additions

The Gers could undergo a major redevelopment this summer under Philippe Clement, who will seek to stamp his authority. Signing a new full-back was a priority for the club, and Rangers appear to have won the race for Jefte’s signature.

Barisic has been at the club for six years and has made over 230 appearances in all competitions. However, the 31-year-old defender has been allowed to move to Trabzonspor.

Clement has Ridvan Yilmaz as another option, but his future at the club is far from certain. He has been often linked with a move to Turkish club Galatasaray but nothing concrete has come out.

While APOEL had the first option to sign the young defender, the player made it absolutely clear that he wants to move to Scotland instead.

The Scottish Sun suggests that Rangers are close to agreeing a deal for Levski Sofia defender Jose Cordoba. Clement is also looking to add a new goalkeeper to their ranks, and talks have been held to sign Liam Kelly.
