Rangers’ Gary McAllister admits to a new Ibrox championship in a fresh Celtic verdict

Rangers: McAllister makes title admission in fresh Celtic verdict

Rangers’ former assistant Gary McAllister has revealed that the club’s success this season would be determined solely by whether or not they win the Premiership.

Philippe Clement’s side advanced to the Scottish Cup final with a 2-0 win over Hearts at Hampden Park on Sunday (21 April), due to a brace from Cyriel Dessers, who also won the Viaplay Cup earlier this season.

The Light Blues are three points behind the Hoops with five league games remaining, but former Ibrox assistant McAllister feels completing a cup double this season will not be enough to be regarded a success.

In an interview with Sky Sports Scotland (April 22), he stated, “I think the barometer is always the league. Winning trophies is really difficult, even for the big clubs, so it’s always a good thing.”

“But I believe major clubs are always assessed on league titles. There’s something about winning a league that elevates you to another level. Deep down, I believe that everyone behind the scenes, including the manager, players, staff, and owners, will continue to strive to win the league.

“It simply brings back memories of Steven, myself, and the team coming up from south of the border. We were quite a little behind Celtic, so we were given some leeway, but winning the league was crucial.

“We didn’t have any real success in the cups, but getting that title was the big thing.”

Can Rangers and Philippe Clement overcome Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title this season?

When Clement came at Ibrox earlier in the season, most supporters had already accepted that they weren’t in a title race due to their poor start under Michael Beale.

However, a solid run of play under the Belgian has brought the Light Blues back into contention at the top of the league. While recent performances have seen the pendulum swing back in the Hoops’ favour, nothing has been determined.

Pundits predict Rangers to lose at Parkhead, handing Celtic the title. However, if the Gers can secure all three points, they will reclaim the Premiership.

Clement hopes to add to his trophy collection in Glasgow by lifting the Scottish Cup at Hampden. Given the status of the team when he arrived, winning two silverware in his first full season will be rather impressive.
