The lead sports reporter for The Echo has already raised £115,000 for charity, and later this month, he plans to add to that total.

Southend United reporter Chris Phillips set for biggest fundraiser yet | Echo

Chris will walk 35 miles between all 16 of the tennis clubs that now compete in the Leigh & Westcliff League on Saturday, June 29, right before Wimbledon begins.

In an effort to collect funds for SECE Mind, he will also play tennis at each of those clubs.

“I always try and avoid repeating a fundraiser I’ve done before,” Chris stated, “but since tennis is one of my biggest passions, I wanted it to have a tennis theme.”

I had given it some thought while driving to several of the locations because I play in the Leigh & Westcliff league.

“After discussing it with James Driscoll, the league’s chairman, we came to the conclusion that it would be appropriately insane for me to attempt.

“However, I hate to think of how long it will take!”

Chris’ walk will begin in Basildon David Lloyd and end at Southend Lawn, his club.

Furthermore, he has once more issued a challenge to generate money and awareness for mental health concerns.

Chris, the chief sports writer for the Echo, said, “I struggle with my mental health and it’s important people realise it’s just them feeling that way.”

“I’ve done it before, but I try my best these days to emphasize that people shouldn’t feel ashamed of these kinds of difficulties.

“I would be delighted if individuals could participate in any portion of the walk as it demonstrates that, similar to depression, unity is possible in overcoming obstacles.”

Chris also promised to hold an online drawing to choose the proposed color of hair dye for the walk if he raises £10,000 before the day of the event.

Chris laughed and said, “I think I should be safe because I chose an amount I don’t think I’ll get to before the day.”

“Remember, with all the stress of covering Southend United every day, it’s going grey now anyhow!

Chris played tennis nonstop for 11 hours and five minutes last summer in order to raise £14,011 for SECE Mind.

He was shortlisted for the National LTA Presidents Award as a result of the fundraising; the award presentation is scheduled for the second day of Wimbledon.
