Sheffield United are reportedly interested in signing Luton Town’s John McAtee during the summer transfer season.

McAtee joined Barnsley on loan from Kenilworth Road in 2023-24 to gain consistent first-team minutes.

McAtee has impressed with the Tykes, scoring 12 goals and assisting four times in 39 third-tier outings as the Oakwell club competes for promotion.

Barnsley is now sixth in League One, but could miss out on playoffs by the end of the season.

The Reds’ current five-game winless streak in the third tier marks the end of Neill Collins’ managerial tenure.

Sheffield United want Luton’s McAtee

Sheffield United are interested in signing Luton’s McAtee during the summer transfer window, as reported by The Sun.

According to the source, the Blades are planning for an immediate return to the Championship, with the 24-year-old potentially playing a key role in the second tier.

Despite Chris Wilder’s return to replace Paul Heckingbottom, United remain at the bottom of the Premier League league.

James McAtee, John’s younger brother, is currently on loan from Manchester City to play for the Blades this season.

Wilder wants to keep the 21-year-old, although Championship leaders Leicester City are reportedly interested in the midfielder.

Were Ipswich Town and Sunderland interested in McAtee?

Sheffield United is not the only club interested in McAtee this season. The 24-year-old reportedly declined offers from the Championship during the January transfer window.

It is reported that Premier League contenders Ipswich and Sunderland were hoping to entice the attacker to Portman Road and the Stadium of Light, respectively.

However, McAtee and his parent club, Luton, were pleased with his first-team experiences at Oakwell and chose to extend his season-long loan to Barnsley.

McAtee aims to assist Martin Devaney’s Reds finish in the top six on the season’s last day against mid-table Northampton Town in Yorkshire.
