Southampton arrange Jack Clarke move
A article by The Northern Echo now suggests that Southampton are preparing to bid for the Sunderland No.20 following returning to the Premier League.
It is reported that Clarke has been a long-term target for the Saints, and Martin’s side are now in a position to finally make a serious bid for his signature.
Sunderland are thought to be gearing themselves for a bid as many at the Stadium of Light expect an approach from Southampton.
The Northern Echo also reports that Sunderland has not made headway in contract negotiations with Clarke, who has two years left on his present agreement. As a result, the Black Cats would be considering selling him, fearing they may lose him for a far lower price next summer.
The 23-year-old is reportedly valued at £20 million by Sunderland.
In 40 Championship games, Clarke netted 15 goals, leading Sunderland to a 16th-place finish in 2023–2024.
There are rivals for Russell Martin.
Even if Southampton’s promotion to the Premier League has made this transfer feasible this summer, there will undoubtedly be tough competition for Clarke’s services.
According to the Northern Echo, Lazio may revive their interest in the forward, who was born in York, following the rejection of two bids in January, the second of which was valued at £15 million.
Maurizio Sarri’s side may provide Clarke European action next season, although it is also reported that West Ham are long-term admirers of the Englishman, so the Hammers could get involved too.
In January, the East Londoners expressed interest in signing the Sunderland star.
As a result, Southampton will find it difficult to close this deal, although Martin’s prospects of signing Clarke have definitely improved following Leeds’ collapse at Wembley.
