Rodgers  in his speech could land his next Tom Rogic in Celtic swoop for 10-goal star

Celtic reappointed manager Brendan Rodgers to Parkhead for a second stint in the dugout last summer, following Ange Postecoglou’s departure to a club in England.

Rodgers’ return to Glasgow proved successful, culminating in a domestic double during the 2023/24 season. His team clinched the Scottish Premiership title and secured the SFA Cup with a 1-0 victory over Rangers in the final last month.

Now, with these achievements under their belt, Celtic may set their sights on completing a treble or aiming for even greater success in the upcoming season.

Earlier this month, the summer transfer window officially opened, presenting Brendan Rodgers with an opportunity to potentially secure a player akin to Tom Rogic from Scotland.

There’s a reported interest in Luke McCowan from Dundee, with Celtic among the clubs eyeing the talented midfielder. Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph highlighted this interest, mentioning that MLS teams and English Championship clubs are also monitoring him. This indicates that Celtic may have competition in their pursuit of McCowan.

McCowan’s contract with Dundee is set to expire soon, putting the club in a position where they might need to sell him during this transfer window to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year.

However, the exact asking price from Dundee for the midfielder and Celtic’s potential offer remain uncertain at this stage.

Should a deal be reached, Rodgers could potentially discover his new version of Tom Rogic for Celtic during the 2024/25 season.

Comparing Luke McCowan to Tom Rogic:

Similar to the Australian star, McCowan is a left-footed central midfielder who could contribute effectively as a squad player, showcasing his ability to both score and create goals from midfield.

During his time under Rodgers, Rogic didn’t exceed 22 league appearances in any single season across his three-year tenure, but he accumulated a total of 105 appearances across all competitions. In those games, the left-footed playmaker contributed significantly with 24 goals and 20 assists. His standout season under Rodgers in the Premiership saw him achieve seven goals and five assists during the 2016/17 campaign.

As shown in the table above, the 26-year-old maestro made a significant impact in attack from his midfield role, contributing to 15 goals directly in 37 appearances. This tally could have been higher if his teammates had capitalized on the scoring opportunities he created.

Described as “tenacious” by writer Kai Watson, McCowan scored ten goals across all competitions for Dundee, demonstrating his capability to provide a goal-scoring threat for Celtic if acquired.

In addition to his attacking prowess, McCowan also proves solid defensively, averaging 2.5 tackles and interceptions per game in the Premiership. This defensive contribution adds to his value as a versatile midfielder who can impact both ends of the pitch.
