Rotherham United are reportedly leading the competition to acquire Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Marko Marosi on a free transfer this summer, according to the Shropshire Star.
The Slovakian goalkeeper is set to become a free agent with his contract at League One rivals Shrewsbury Town nearing its end, suggesting that Marosi might soon join the Millers.
How did Marosi fair last season?
Since joining from Coventry City in 2021, Marosi has solidified his position as Shrewsbury’s primary goalkeeper, maintaining a significant role throughout the last season.
Marosi made 48 appearances across all competitions last season, securing 11 clean sheets and helping Shrewsbury stay in League One for another year.
Rotherham’s former top goalkeeper, Viktor Johansson, has departed to join Stoke City for an undisclosed fee, while Shrewsbury Town has already been linked to various goalkeepers to find Marosi’s replacement.
A transfer reunion
Moving to Rotherham United would enable Marosi to reunite with former Coventry City captain Liam Kelly, who has already joined the Millers under new manager Steve Evans. He would also join former Sky Blues forward Jonson Clarke-Harris and several other new additions.
Rotherham’s squad includes several players with promotion experience, and Marosi could contribute to that, having won the League One title with Coventry City in the 2019/20 season.
Can Rotherham return to the second tier?
Rotherham United had a frustrating 2023/24 season, resulting in their relegation back to League One and an away win drought that has lasted nearly two years.
However, since Steve Evans returned as manager last month, Rotherham has quickly bolstered their squad with experienced players like Joe Rafferty, Liam Kelly, and Jonson Clarke-Harris joining the team.
The potential signing of Marosi would enhance the club’s goalkeeping options, with him expected to compete against Dillon Phillips for the starting position next season.
