Philippe Clement is “unhappy” at the prospect of losing six first-team Rangers players on a free transfer this summer, according to Rangers Review.
John Lundstram, Kemar Roofe, Leon Balogun, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack and Jon McLaughlin are all set to see their Ibrox deals expire at the end of the season, with interest in left-back Barisic and midfielder Lundstram linked with moves to Turkey.
But Clement has admitted that no deals are close to happening as it stands to keep them in Glasgow, despite his wishes, and journalist Matthew Lindsay says the boss is unhappy about it.
“Clement is unhappy that six members of his squad – Leon Balogun, Borna Barisic, Ryan Jack, John Lundstram and Jon McLaughlin are the others – can leave for nothing in the summer,” they wrote.
“’There’s no reason to talk about anything.“Because you can say it’s close or it’s far away. But you can never really talk about that,’ Clement said.
“It’s close when it’s signed. When it’s not signed? Is it close or is it far? So there’s no reason to talk about those things until there’s an agreement.”
The best thing this Rangers board have done in years was appoint Clement as manager, because he has made the club serious again.
A huge points deficit in the league table has been overturned and you could now argue that the team are the favourites to lift the title at the end of the season, while they made a great run for it in Europe too.
He has made this limited squad compete at the highest level and has turned the players into what he needs, but there is expected to be a “mini-revolution” at Ibrox this summer in the transfer window.
That means several players will come in at Ibrox but some will also leave the club, and the likelihood is that some of those out of contract aren’t necessarily wanted.
But the ones the manager wants, the club must do all they can to keep them around as Clement has earned the right to build the squad in his image.
