SAD: Suspect in shooting that injured Auburn’s Brian Battie, killed his brother arrested

An arrest has been made in relation to the shooting in Sarasota that claimed the life of Tommie Battie IV, the older brother of Auburn running back Brian Battie, and critically injured Battie.

In a press release, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office stated that Darryl Bernard Brookins, 28, of Sarasota, was taken into custody on Wednesday with the aid of the U.S. Marshals Task Force.

The shooting that occurred early on Saturday morning in Sarasota, Florida, on the 3400 block of 17th street, close to Tallywood Centre Place, had Brookins identified as the suspect.

In addition to being charged with attempted murder, Brookins is also accused of being a felon in possession of a handgun. The Sarasota County Correctional Facility will receive his booking.

Deputies arrived at the site at around 3:30 a.m., according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office’s original press release, and discovered a sizable gathering in the parking lot with numerous shooting victims.

One of those victims was Brian Battie, who Hugh Freeze, the head football coach at Auburn, claimed was on a ventilator in a Monday post on X, the social media site that used to be known as Twitter.

According to Evan Keats, the Sarasota Director of Community Affairs, Brian Battie’s older brother, Tommie Battie IV, 24, was declared deceased at the scene, AL.com was informed on Saturday.

The campaign’s organisers stated that tragedies “bring financial burdens along with all of the emotional pain and stress that they bring.”
