Sheffield United have reached an agreement to sign FC Basel winger Liam Millar, according to Adam Oxley. After being relegated from the Premier League last season, the Blades finished at the bottom of the top division and are now preparing for another season in the Championship.
Sheffield United edged out Burnley and Sunderland in the race to sign the 24-year-old winger. Burnley, who were also relegated, will join Sunderland and Preston North End in the second tier.
Millar, 24, was on loan at Deepdale last season, where he played 35 Championship games for Preston North End, scoring five goals and providing five assists. Formerly a Liverpool youth player, he moved permanently to Basel in 2021 but struggled to find consistency.
Despite interest from Sheffield United, Burnley, Sunderland, and Preston North End for a permanent transfer this summer, it appears the Blades have secured his move to Bramall Lane, pending the conclusion of the Copa America.
Millar showcased his talent at Deepdale, hinting at a likely return to the Championship this summer. He is versatile, able to play across the front three, though he has mainly been positioned on the left.
The Canadian international, currently at the Copa America, played in their 2-0 defeat to Argentina last night. A move to Sheffield United could provide the stability he needs after a tumultuous time at Basel.
All four interested clubs aim for a top-tier finish. Sheffield United and Burnley seek immediate returns to the Premier League, targeting a top-six finish at minimum. Sunderland aims to improve on their poor performance last season, and Preston North End hopes for a similar upward trajectory. Missing out on Millar is a setback for these clubs, but with the transfer window just starting, they have time to explore other options.
