Sheffield Wednesday has a lot of optimism going into the upcoming season after a total turnabout in the team’s fortunes that followed the hiring of manager Danny Rohl.
The Owls, who had appeared doomed at one point, would make quite the comeback, winning three of their last four games and going undefeated in the remaining eight, to end in 20th position in the Championship standings. They would only escape by three points, so a victory on the last day was crucial, but they now appear to be a team on the rise. There are many reasons for Owls supporters to be happy after the German signed a three-year contract extension last week, extending his stay with the team. Under Rohl, they have transformed from a possible League One team to a somewhat ambitious team with a significant project.
A lot of players may be drawn to them this season because of the way they concluded the 2023–2024 season, which highlights the route they’re currently on.
To demonstrate their faith in the management, the club is already attempting to expand its ranks, even though improvements are still needed. They’ve recently been connected to Arsenal’s promising teenage attacker Mika Biereth, which strengthens their argument as a competitive team.
Biereth, who Transfermarkt values at £6 million, has been a tremendous asset for the Austrian team while spending the second part of the season on loan at Strum Graz. In just 22 games for the team, the 21-year-old has already garnered plenty of admirers with nine goals and four assists.
Sheffield Wednesday is among the teams interested in the Austrian striker, but it appears that they will have to work hard to secure his services. The Standard has revealed that Strum Graz plans to meet with the striker this week to discuss a permanent contract.
With a year remaining on his contract at Arsenal, the player may be able to depart this summer, making it an alluring offer. If he were to join, he would be playing Champions League games. Although Wednesday still has a chance to sign him, they might suddenly be too expensive to make a move.
They might lose out on this one because it’s unlikely that Rohl will want to spend the majority of the funds on one player during the summer transfer window.
Author’s Perspective
If Sheffield Wednesday were to recruit the young player, it would undoubtedly be a statement, but they might be putting all their eggs in one basket. Without a question, Biereth is talented, but it’s difficult to justify his asking price for a team like the Owls.
This summer, if Rohl does a good job of recruiting, they should at least aim for a top-half finish. Their season-ending performance was quite remarkable, and the manager will be eager to demonstrate that it was not an anomaly.
Wednesday may decide to pursue that path with the availability of some excellent free agents, but Biereth is still a player to keep an eye on and has the potential to be very successful.
