Bradford City Women are aiming for promotion from the North East Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division this season, but they faced a significant setback on Sunday.
They suffered a heavy 6-0 defeat against Chester-le-Street Town Ladies after a disappointing collapse, despite being the stronger side for the first 40 minutes.
Hannah Markey and Rebecca Hunt both came close to scoring for the Bantams within the first 10 minutes, while Meg Long and Matilda Fernie effectively defended against the hosts’ attacks.
Captain Monika Stube had a shot saved just after the half-hour mark, but Chester-le-Street began to gain momentum from that point. They took the lead just before halftime when Tiffany Whelan made a good save, but could not prevent the rebound from finding the net.
The hosts scored again in first-half stoppage time with a shot at the near post. Whelan made another solid save early in the second half as City struggled under pressure. Despite being two goals down midway through the second half, they still held out hopes for a comeback.
However, Chester-le-Street scored their third goal in the 68th minute, followed almost immediately by a fourth, effectively ending the contest. Two late goals capped off a disappointing day for the Bantams, who dropped to eighth place as a result of the loss.
Niyah Dunbar scored twice for the hosts, with other goals from Jenny Ashton, Katie Ellison, Laura Hockaday, and Rhiannon Gray.
Chester-le-Street now tops the table on goal difference ahead of Ponteland United and South Shields, with all three teams having secured 10 points from their first four league matches.
Bradford City will face another challenging opponent in South Shields next Sunday, as they seek their first league victory since winning 3-2 against Wallsend on opening day.
