Phil Kessel is actively seeking an NHL contract, according to insider Elliotte Friedman. Despite not playing since the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs with the Vegas Golden Knights, Kessel is making calls to teams in hopes of securing a deal. Last season, he was unable to land a contract after a tryout with the Vancouver Canucks.
As training camps approach, Friedman revealed on the ’32 Thoughts The Podcast’ that Kessel is reaching out to teams because he remains eager to play. Although there were discussions about him joining a three-on-three league that ultimately didn’t materialize, Kessel’s enthusiasm for the game is clear.
Friedman also mentioned that the Columbus Blue Jackets had shown some interest in Kessel. With Columbus having a challenging season last year and aiming for improvement, Kessel’s reputation as a player who brings a positive energy could have been appealing. However, the Blue Jackets have since signed James van Riemsdyk, which may affect their pursuit of Kessel.
Meanwhile, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving indicated that the team may still make moves before the season begins. While the roster is mostly set, Treliving expressed openness to improving the team, emphasizing that any changes should genuinely enhance the team rather than just making a splash for the sake of it. The Maple Leafs will start their 2024-25 season on October 9 against the Montreal Canadiens.
