Flynn Downes Confirms Che Adams Has Left Southampton
Southampton recently released their list of retained players this year, which included discussions about a new contract for Che Adams. However, Russell Martin has now publicly commented on the situation, stating that the Scottish international has ‘departed’.
Adams’ contract was due to end this summer, and while negotiations were ongoing, his future remained uncertain. As Southampton prepares for the Premier League season after promotion from the Championship, Martin is keen to retain key players from the squad.
Southampton striker is ‘gone’
On The Stomping Ground YouTube channel, during an interview, Martin and new Southampton signing Flynn Downes were asked about who controlled the music in the dressing room. They both indicated that Che Adams used to be responsible for this but confirmed that he has now left the club.
Martin remarked, “Che Adams used to, but he’s gone.”
Downes later added, “Yeah, he’s gone, so I can’t mention Che.”

In their June announcement of the retained list, Southampton disclosed ongoing contract discussions with both Che Adams and Alex McCarthy, whose current contracts were set to expire this summer. Alongside this news, the club confirmed the departures of Jake Vokins, Dynel Simeu, Matt Carson, and Luke Pearce, leading some Southampton supporters to anticipate Adams eventually re-signing with the club.
Adams played a significant role in Southampton’s immediate return to the Premier League, making his potential departure on a free transfer less than ideal. While manager Russell Martin has options in attack with Adam Armstrong, Sekou Mara, Paul Onuachu, and Ross Stewart, none have yet proven themselves in England’s top flight.
He joined Juventus on loan in January
During the January transfer window, Carlos Alcaraz joined Juventus on loan for the remainder of the 2023/2024 season. The Argentinian midfielder clearly wasn’t in the plans of Martin, but the Serie A side haven’t secured his signature on a permanent deal.
Alcaraz has now returned to the Saints, and according to The Athletic, the young star wants to stay with the club. As it stands, Southampton’s stance is unclear, but the report does suggest that he is highly rated at St Mary’s Stadium.
