The midfielder at Celtic made an impression, and a transfer chase has begun.

Paulo Bernardo is currently without a job at Benfica due to the Portuguese midfielder’s Celtic aspirations.

The 21-year-old won the Scottish Cup and Premiership while playing on loan at Parkhead during the previous campaign. It’s thought that manager Brendan Rodgers wants the midfield player to return to Glasgow permanently, partnering with Adam Idah of Norwich City and a goalkeeper.

Bernardo is one of several Benfica players “who are now looking for a new opportunity after having been loaned out,” according to Record. The star is reportedly “awaiting an agreement between Benfica and Celtic for a permanent move to the Scottish champions,” according to the report.

Although A Bola claims Bernardo is not in manager Roger Schmidt’s plans, he will rejoin his original club for the commencement of preseason. Moving down the Benfica hierarchy is also planned, as the Champions League-bound team intends to recruit Leandro Barreiro, a former Mainz midfielder.
He was loaned to Portugal for the entire previous season, and a permanent contract is being pursued. In January, Rodgers expressed optimism about securing a summer contract. “I’m thrilled with Paulo’s rise,” he declared. We have an opportunity to activate the agreement with the club, should we so choose.

“Since then, he has been learning the fundamentals of our play. I knew coming into last month’s Rangers game that he would start, and we wanted to give him a run of games. He has performed admirably.

Furthermore, he wears a young shoulder and an ancient head. He’s an elite practitioner. I see him maturing as a person these days, feeling more assured around the players. He can now clearly see how we work and play together, and you can see his game improving. He’s been great, and I think he will continue to improve.

“We’ll evaluate it. Towards the end of the season, I’ll have a conversation with him over a meal and decide how to proceed. Do we know how much it will cost? Yes. However, it is obvious that the player would also need to consent; this is a two-way street. However, it appears that Paulo is having a great time here. He is growing and becoming better. Is the cost reasonable? I won’t reveal what it is, but it is unquestionably there or it wouldn’t be in place.
