Former Rangers winger Neil McCann, has had his say on Cyriel Dessers’ controversial goal in the Light Blues’ 2-0 victory over St.Johnstone at Hampden Park on Saturday evening.
The Super Eagles striker started the game on the bench with Danilo being preferred to start over him but he came on for the Brazilian forward at halftime with the Light Blues searching for the opening goal.
One minute after the hour mark, Dessers put the home side ahead with a precise finish from inside the box after being assisted by Rabbi Matondo but the VAR had to intervene before the centre referee Matthew McDermid, allowed the goal stand.
“If a decision is given by the ref, the players will stop – they play to the whistle,” Neil McCann said on BBC Radio Scotland. “The argument is the referee blew the whistle and gave the free-kick, I don’t think it should stand.” Five minutes before the end of regulation time, the Nigerian forward could have added to his tally when Robbie Fraser found him within the box but he dragged his effort beyond goal. Two minutes into the stoppage time, he assisted Ross McCausland for Rangers’ second goal to record his first assist of the campaign. Despite being linked with an exit, Dessers has started the season strongly and he is doing a good job of silencing his critics so far. Abdulkareem Abdulhamid
